Come with us this Spring to experience the colour, the beauty and sensory delights of the best of both public and private gardens of the Central West and the Blue Mountains. With private guided tours and exquisite accommodation, this is sure to be a tour to remember!
Day 1: Canberra to Millthorpe
Today we arrive in Cowra for lunch at the sublime Cowra Japanese Gardens designed by Mr Ken Nakajima to represent the entire landscape of Japan. Enjoy the 5 hectares of cherry blossoms and over 100 other plants. We continue to the heritage listed town of Millthorpe via the historic colonial towns of Carcoar and Blayney.
Day 2: Millthorpe to Oberon
Today we have the full day to enjoy the spring blooms at the magnificent Mayfield Garden when the full 65 hectares of the Hawkins Family Private Estate will be open (this only happens during the Spring festival!). Mayfield is one of the largest privately owned cool climate gardens in the world, and during spring you can explore the maze and paddle a rowboat as well es enjoy the masses of spectacular spring blooms. We also have a private guided tour of the garden, and lunch is in the farm-to-table Mayfield Café.
Day 3: Oberon to Blackheath
This morning we have a private guided tour of a ‘secret’ Blue Mountains garden on our way to Lithgow for lunch. We then head to Mt Tomah to enjoy another private guided tour of the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden which is the only botanic garden in the world within a UNESCO World Heritage Area. When we have had our fill of the 28 hectares of cool climate plants and alpine rainforest, we make our way to Blackheath to our private accommodation for the next 2 nights at the Heritage Glenella Guesthouse.
Day 4: Blackheath and Mt Wilson
This morning we wander down to the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens to view the Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and other exotic species like Pieris, Weeping Flowering Cherry Trees, Lilacs and Forsythia. Lunch is in the volunteer run Rhodo Tea Room. We then head to Mt Wilson to experience its avenues of plane trees, limes, elms, beeches, liquidambars and pink cherries. We will also visit two of Mt Wilson’s world renowned historic private gardens, including a private guided tour of Nooroo.
Day 5: Blackheath to Canberra
This morning we head down the ‘hill’ to the National Trust Everglades House and Gardens in Leura. Enjoy the tranquil reflection pool, the grotto pool and walk the winding paths down the terraced garden with spectacular views of the Jamieson Valley to Mt Solitary. We also have a private guided tour of the house and gardens, and lunch is en route to the Southern Highlands. Our last stop is Red Cow Farm in Sutton Forest with its 1820s cottage surrounded by 20 unique garden ‘rooms.’ Owner and creator Wayne will take us on a private guided tour of this abundant and secretive garden that has been described as one of the best in the world!
