Day 2 – Orange and Ross Hill Wines (B,L)

Today we experience a Christmas ‘cooking masterclass’ at the Barrel and Larder at Ross Hill Wines near Orange, with renowned chef Michael Manners.

“For more than 40 years, pioneering chef Michael Manners, winner of The Sydney Morning Herald Award for Professional Excellence, had a profound influence on the state’s restaurant scene. His acclaimed Orange restaurant, Selkirks, was a beacon of regional fine dining from 1997-2008, when he moved from the Blue Mountains to anchor himself amid the produce he had long championed. Twice named Best Regional Restaurant in the Good Food Guide, Selkirks was one of the state’s greatest dining experiences, a tour de force of the bounty of the region. Michael now enjoys sharing his culinary skills during his Masterclasses at Ross Hill Wine’s Barrel & Larder School of Wine & Food.”

We don’t have to do any cooking ourselves unless we wish to (thank goodness!). We can just sit and watch Michael cook delicious Christmas fare for us and drink delightful Ross Hill wines!

After lunch we head into Cook Park in Orange to see the magnificent giant Redwoods and the ancient Bunya Bunya as well as over 200 other trees from around the world. Trees have been planted in Cook Park since 1870, and in 2018, the jewel in Orange’s crown was awarded  State Heritage status. Dinner is in Millthorpe (if you can fit it in!)

We will enjoy lunch at the quaint Megalong Valley Tea Rooms before a quick stop at Blackheath shops. We then take the scenic drive along the Bells Line of Road into the Hawkesbury Valley to our accommodation at the Crowne Plaza. We then enjoy the celebrations of a Christmas themed dinner with all the trimmings at the Crowne Plaza.

After breakfast, enjoy the swimming pool and the beautiful grounds of the Crowne Plaza, before we head back towards Canberra. We will stop in historic Berrima for a private tour of The National Trust’s 1834 Harper’s Mansion which overlooks the town. Berrima is the only example of an existing and largely preserved Australian Georgian colonial town, and home to Australia’s oldest continually licensed inn – the Surveyor General – where we will have lunch.
